INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Residents of Clark, Jefferson, Ripley, Scott, Warrick and Washington counties whose septic systems were damaged or destroyed by severe storms that occurred Feb. 29 through March 3 could be eligible for federal funding to repair or replace the systems.
In addition, homeowners and renters who have to move out of their homes because of septic system failure due to the disaster may be eligible for rental assistance while the home is made livable.
To determine eligibility, residents need to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by the May 8 deadline to be eligible for recovery assistance.
The registration and help line number is (800) 621-FEMA (3362). For speech- or hearing-impaired applicants, the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585 and Video Relay Service may be accessed at 1-800-621-3362. These lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Register online at www.fema.gov or www.DisasterAssistance.gov; by smart phone or tablet at m.fema.gov.
After registration, an inspector will come to the house to identify and record damage.
FEMA and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security continue to stress that federal disaster recovery funds may only be used for their specific, intended purposes.
