Auction will dispose of excess property and save taxpayer dollars

CHICAGO -- Today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced an open online auction to sell two commercial buildings in Fairview Park, Ohio, once part of NASA’s Glenn Research Center. The auction is part of GSA’s ongoing efforts to dispose of excess properties to save taxpayer dollars and make more efficient use of the government’s real estate assets. In the past year alone, the federal government has sold or transferred 97 excess properties valued at $82 million.

"As part of our mission in effectively managing government assets, GSA is saving money by disposing of buildings and facilities that are no longer needed," said Ann P. Kalayil, regional administrator of GSA’s Great Lakes Region. "We are moving these excess and underutilized properties off of the government’s books and working to get the best deal for taxpayers."

The two buildings at the Glenn Research Center are no longer used to their full potential and have been deemed excess federal property. This center was built in the 1960’s during NASA's Apollo Era, and served as office space for engineering and administrative staff. Situated on 9.8 acres of land, the property contains approximately 160,000 and 40,000 square feet of space in two buildings and includes a small parking lot and landscaped areas.

The auction began this month with a starting minimum bid of $200,000. Bids may be submitted at GSA's auction website at RealEstateSales.gov. The government seeks to obtain fair market value for the property.
