In the week ending September 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 365,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 377,000. The 4-week moving average was 371,250, an increase of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 371,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.6 percent for the week ending August 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending August 25 was 3,322,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,328,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,320,750, a decrease of 3,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,324,250.
UNADJUSTED DATAThe advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 307,831 in the week ending September 1, a decrease of 4,280 from the previous week. There were 348,582 initial claims in the comparable week in 2011.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent during the week ending August 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,075,994, a decrease of 39,314 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 3,436,188.The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending August 18 was 5,467,752, a decrease of 63,076 from the previous week. There were 7,167,416 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2011 Extended Benefits were not available in any states during the week ending August 18. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,226 in the week ending August 25, a decrease of 67 from the prior week. There were 2,661 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 48 from the preceding week. There were 17,060 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending August 18, a decrease of 505 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 38,939, a decrease of 1 from the prior week. States reported 2,263,614 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending August 18, a decrease of 9,703 from the prior week. There were 3,060,622 persons claiming EUC in the comparable week in 2011. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending August 18 were in Puerto Rico (4.2), Pennsylvania (3.7), New Jersey (3.7), Connecticut (3.7), Alaska (3.6), California (3.5), New York (3.1), Rhode Island (3.0), Oregon (3.0), and Massachusetts (2.9).The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending August 25 were in New York (+3,110), North Carolina (+1,237), Georgia (+1,039), Massachusetts (+731), and Ohio (+631), while the largest decreases were in California (-1,757), Pennsylvania (-1,273), Michigan (-1,203), Florida (-844), and South Carolina (-787).
