CHRISTINE CAMPBELL: A FIGHTER AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND HIV/AIDS IN THE BAHAMS

The U.S. Department of State selected Christine Campbell, a Bahamian alumna of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ (ECA) International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), as April’s State Alumni Member of the Month. Campbell participated twice in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) – first in 1987 on the topic of drug abuse prevention and education and again in 2001 on the topic of HIV/AIDS prevention and education. Campbell notes one of the key concepts she learned from her programs was the value of networking and the exchange of ideas, and has applied these concepts by organizing impactful programs for youth and women. Campbell currently serves as the government of The Bahamas’ first assistant secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development and officer in charge of the Bureau of Women’s Affairs.

Throughout her career, Campbell has been a central force in The Bahamas in the prevention of drug abuse, teen pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS. Today, in her capacity as the government of The Bahamas’ first assistant secretary in the Ministry of Labor and Social Development and officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Women’s Affairs, Campbell has brought a renewed public focus to the issues impacting women and is considered one of The Bahamas’ top women’s rights advocates. Finally, demonstrating the strength of the connections made through exchange experiences, Campbell regularly collaborates with her fellow Bahamian alumni when developing workshops and other outreach activities in her official capacity.

Throughout April, her leadership and dedication to the women and youth of The Bahamas will be recognized on the State Alumni website (https://alumni.state.gov), ECA’s official website for the more than one million Department-sponsored exchange alumni worldwide. Each month, the Bureau’s Alumni Affairs Division, which supports alumni as they build on their exchange experiences, confers the award on an outstanding alumnus or alumna.
