On the Occasion of the Republic of San Marino's National Day

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am
delighted to send best wishes to the people of San Marino as you celebrate your
National Day this September 3.
This is a time to reflect upon San Marino’s founding. As San Marino continues to grow, it has embodied its motto of libertas, weaving freedom and tolerance into the fabric of its governmental and social structures. The relationship between our two countries dates back more than 150 years when San Marino granted honorary citizenship to Abraham Lincoln. Today, we celebrate our work together in areas such as international trade and the promotion of democracy and human rights.
As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States sends best wishes to all Sammarinese people for peace and happiness in the year to come.
