U.S. EXTENDS WARM WISHES TO PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN ON THEIR INDEPENDENCE DAY

FROM:  U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT
Pakistan Independence Day
Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
August 14, 2013

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I extend warm wishes to the government and people of Pakistan as you commemorate 66 years of independence.

As you mark Independence Day this year, we also celebrate Pakistan’s historic democratic transition and its continued advancement as a stable democracy in South Asia.

The people of Pakistan deserve enormous credit for their role in the peaceful transition from one democratically elected government to another. The United States congratulates you on this achievement and wishes you continued success on the path to peace and prosperity.

Earlier this month, when I visited Pakistan, I had the opportunity meet with the newly elected government of Prime Minister Sharif, and also to highlight our shared interest and cooperation in areas such as energy, the economy, education, and countering extremism.

I have been fortunate to enjoy the hospitality and friendship of many Pakistanis over the course of my visits to your country over the years. These are the types of connections that form the foundation of the long term partnership between the American and Pakistani people.

As I said earlier this month, the United States remains fully engaged in building a relationship that is based on mutual interests and mutual respect.

I look forward to continuing to work closely with my counterparts in Pakistan to advance a shared vision that ensures a stable, secure, and prosperous Pakistan for generations to come.
