U.S. Marshals Arrest Foreign Fugitive Wanted in Canada
WASHINGTON – A team of Deputy U.S. Marshals in Las Vegas, Nevada arrested a foreign fugitive Monday who was wanted on an outstanding federal warrant based on charges from Quebec, Canada.
Marc Adam, age 60, is accused of abducting his two children and fleeing to the United States. On Oct. 29, a Justice of the Peace in Quebec, Canada issued an arrest warrant for Adam. Canadian authorities sought the help of the U.S. Marshals Service to apprehend the fugitive. On Friday, a federal arrest warrant was issued by the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., which seeks his extradition from the United States to Canada, based upon the outstanding criminal charges in Quebec. The warrant was issued as a result of a request from the Government of Canada to the Department of Justice Office of International Affairs.
On Sunday, Deputy U.S. Marshals from Washington D.C., with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Investigative Operations Division, obtained information that Adam was in Las Vegas, Nevada. A request for assistance was forwarded to the U.S. Marshals in Las Vegas, where Deputy U.S. Marshals arrested Adam without incident, and the two children were safely recovered and turned over to child protective services. The United States Marshals Service and the Department of State are working with authorities in Canada to return the children to their legal guardian.
“Our team acted quickly to ensure the safe resolution of this case. I am proud that the U.S. Marshals could assist our international counterparts.” said U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia Edwin Sloane.
Adam made an initial appearance Monday in the District of Nevada, where he now faces extradition to Canada.
Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals Service result in the apprehension of approximately 36,000 federal fugitives.
