On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I extend warm wishes to the people of Malta as you celebrate your Independence Day on September 21.
Malta has long been a partner for peace and democracy in the Mediterranean. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the armistice between the United States and Italy, which was signed in Maltese waters.
Malta continues to honor its reputation today as a haven for peace by providing humanitarian aid to the people of North Africa, and advocating for human rights and economic prosperity in the Mediterranean region and beyond.
We look forward to deepening our close partnership in the years to come and wish you a joyous celebration on this special occasion.
