Guatemala's Independence Day
Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
September 13, 2013
On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Guatemala on the anniversary of your independence this September 15.
During my visit to Antigua in June for the OAS General Assembly, I experienced first-hand the warm hospitality of Guatemalans and saw the beauty of your rich and diverse cultural heritage. President Perez Molina and I renewed our commitment to build safe and resilient communities, safeguard human rights, and support broad economic growth to expand opportunities for all our citizens.
The United States and Guatemala share warm family and friendship ties, a vibrant economic relationship, and a commitment to democracy and the rule of law. As you celebrate with family and friends, the American people join you in building a brighter future for generations to come.
