Combined Force Captures Taliban Leader

WASHINGTON, May 4, 2012 - An Afghan-led, coalition-supported security force detained a Taliban leader and two additional insurgents during an operation in the Imam Sahib district of Afghanistan's Kunduz province today, military officials reported.
The insurgent leader planned and conducted roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition troops. He also coordinated the movement of insurgents from Pakistan to Kunduz.
In other Afghanistan operations today:
-- A combined force detained a Taliban leader and several other suspected insurgents in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province. The insurgent leader conducted roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
-- In the Terayzai district of Khost province, combined force detained a Haqqani leader as well as multiple other insurgents and seized weapons along with bomb-making materials. The Haqqani leader conducted roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
-- A combined force detained several suspects and seized multiple IED-making components during a search for a Taliban leader in the Andar district of Ghazni province. The leader organizes roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
In Afghanistan operations yesterday:
-- A combined force discovered a drug cache containing about 645 pounds of opium in the Khash Rod district of Nimroz province. The security force destroyed the cache.
-- A coalition airstrike killed seven insurgents in the Naka district of Paktika province.
-- Afghan soldiers and coalition forces killed an insurgent in the Watahpur district of Kunar province.
-- Coalition forces also killed one insurgent and wounded another in Kunar province's Watahpur district after watching the insurgents preparing mortars for an attack.
-- Afghan National Police and coalition forces detained a Haqqani affiliate in the Muhammad Aghah district of Logar province.
